October 29, 2023 — A 5.6 magnitude earthquake was detected in Jamaica approximately Monday afternoon. Jamaicans fleer buildings and remained cautious amid the shake. Power went out in some areas however according to APnews.com PM. Andrew Holness stated that no apparent serious damages or death occurred.

In one video shown, you can see food, wine bottles along with various other items crushed and scattered over the grocery stores floors.

In another video you can see the up-earthing of sidewalk walkways.

The tremor’s epicenter was about 2 miles (4 kilometers) west-northwest of Hope Bay in northeastern Jamaica, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It occurred at a shallow depth of 6 miles (10 kilometers).

Is The 5.0 Earthquake In Jamaica Deadly

While a 5.0 earthquake can be deadly depending on local infrastructure, it is generally not very deadly though not impossible to see mass casualties.

A 5.0 earthquake on the Richter scale indicates a moderate seismic event, causing noticeable shaking but generally resulting in limited damage.

What To Do During An Earthquake

During an earthquake, “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” is advised. Drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy object, and hold on until the shaking stops. Avoid doorways and windows, and stay indoors if possible. If outside, move to an open area away from buildings and trees. Afterward, be cautious of potential aftershocks.
