Jamaican Cheese Bread have been around since the discovery of coco bread or Callaloo loaf. Jamaican cheese loaf is naturally healthy filled with nutrients, minerals and vitamins.

It is believed that cheese bread was invented not too long or before Callaloo loafs. Cheese bread is popular in the Caribbean and is a even more popular in Jamaica. To make this loaf even more healthy, use whole grain flour or any flour lower in carbohydrates.

These Jamaican Cheese Loaves are soft, buttery cheese filled delights. They’re baked in a soft flour dough and are sure to satisfy anyone looking to get a quick cheese fix. A great alternative to a typical cheese sandwich.

Ingredients

  • Dough Ingredients
  • 360 grams flour
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 12 grams sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 113 grams milk
  • 97 grams water
  • 12 grams oil
  • Cheese Filling
  • 3 cups mild cheddar grated
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • half onion grated (optional)
  • white pepper to taste

Instructions 

  • Mix together all the dough ingredients and knead until you have a soft, tacky dough. This should take about 6-8 minutes.
  • Set the dough aside to rise in a covered bowl for about 30 minutes while you work on the filling.
  • In a bowl, mix together grated cheese, butter, onion and white pepper.
  • Preheat oven to 400 F.
  • Line a half sheet pan with parchment paper.
  • When dough has risen, divide into 6 equal pieces.
  • Roll each piece out to a 6- 7 inch circle.
  • Top half of the circle with two heaping tablespoons of cheese filling
  • Gently spread cheese filling leaving a quarter inch from the edge untouched.
  • Moisten this untouched edge with water or egg wash.
  • Fold the other half over and press down to seal the dough.
  • Ensure that the filling is even and there are no bulges before sealing.
  • Let rest for 10 minutes
  • Bake for 15 minutes or until the Cheese loaves are a light golden brown.
  • Let cool for a couple minutes before eating.
