Spice Is Not The Only Artist To Make This Controversial Move, Remeber Ricky Trooper?
After public rebuke from many Jamaicans about the current lesbian takeover of dancehall and reggae, singer Spice has agreed to headline Toronto’s 2022 gay pride festival. Spice is not the only artist to make this controversial move, years back Jamaican selector Ricky Trooper was secretly recorded agreeing to headline for a homosexual club. The DJ stated that he wouldn’t have a problem playing for the event as long as the money is right.
Why Spice’s Decision To Headline A Gay Event Is a Bad Move
After both Jada Kingdom and Lila Ike came out of the closet as lesbians, the entire industry is shaken up. The impact that this move will have on young impressionable minds will be devasting long term. Jamaica once proudly stood against homosexuality but has recently fall back on its stance.
No doubt that the decisions made by Spice and other artists will only push them further in their careers due to the nature of the industry. We have seen countless examples of artists who came out of the closet and almost immediately topped the charts and sold a record amount of albums.
This move by the artists will negatively impact their careers in Jamaica but will boost their fan base overseas. Sadly some Jamaicans will continue to support these artists as Jamaica is currently undergoing a change in morals.
What Should Jamaicans Do
Jamaicans can help stop the trend of homosexuality in the music industry by not supporting these artists locally and abroad. These artist are emboldened due to Jamaicans relaxed views on gays and lesbian. Jamaicans are not as strict on homosexuality as before.
We should protest by shunning these artists for the sake of the youths. If we have openly gay female artists and homosexual sympathizers we will soon have gay male artists, this will cast a bad shadow on the Island and pretty soon gay tourists will flock the Island and spread their ways to locals.

This is a really disappointing take on this topic. I clicked on this article expecting to see Jamaican pride, and support of Jamaican artists, regardless of orientation. It is sad to see such outdated views hanging around today. If you can’t say anything nice… oops, I guess I need to take my own advice! And hopefully I’m being nice about it.
Good for these artists that they have been able to find some commercial success and can make a living from their talents. Enough of the Kardashians and other talentless people who are famous for … being famous? Nice to see real talent prevailing.
Homosexuality is wrong and I believe gay sex is illegal in Jamaica and is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
Gen, thank you for your comment. And yes, you are being very nice in the face of homophobia. Members of 2SLGBTQ+ communities need to know that they are loved and supported.
When we decolonize our minds, we realize that homophobia and transphobia stems from people distorting history and religious texts. I refuse to live in shame because my ancestors were programmed to think of themselves as wrong because of the colour of their skin, their beliefs, and who they chose to love. No more.
Grateful to artists like Spice for opening their hearts. We are all capable of change when we move through fear.
