Basil (Ocimum basilicum) – within the same family as mint, lavender and rosemary. There are roughly sixty species of basil with Sweet and Thai being the most popular. It is believed the plant is originated from Africa or Asia and sometimes refer to as the “king of herbs“. In ancient times it was said to cure scorpion bites while others believed that it was poisonous.
usage
Basil is perfect in any recipe – you can use it fresh or dried. It compliments almost any taste profile; nutty, sweet, salty, acidic, and is truly the “king of herbs“– if not, certainly it is at the very top of ideal herbs. Basil also goes well with salads and balsamic vinegar. It is an essential ingredient in Italian food, below I have included a Tomato Basil Pesto Recipe.
